OpenAI named its new agent system Dots. It’s already causing confusion.
OpenAI’s new AI agents are meant to help people get work done. Instead, their first job may be to explain that they're not a Chinese AI lab, a small fashion retailer, or Elon Musk's Grok.
At its DevDay event on Tuesday, OpenAI unveiled Dots, a fleet of always-on AI assistants that can keep working across projects after a user closes the chat. In CEO Sam Altman's presentation, the agents appeared as colorful, cartoonish blob avatars.
Judging by the internet’s response after the name was unveiled, OpenAI's new product name is also extremely difficult to look up.
For one, it's already associated with two Chinese AI companies.
Last year, social media company RedNote spun out an AI group called Dots Studio, which makes vision language models.
