Grid Connection at European Ports & Airports: Solutions to Accelerate Transport Electrification
Imagine buying an electric van for your business, then discovering the cable connecting it to the grid won’t be installed for another ten years. That, roughly, is the position Europe’s ports and airports are in today.
While the EU has reduced its overall greenhouse gas emissions by 30 percent since 1990, emissions from international aviation and shipping have moved in the opposite direction, rising by29 percent and 26 percentrespectively.
No other economic sector has grown its emissions as much. Those two sectors are hard to decarbonise because direct electrification is currently challenging due to the massive energy density required for long-distance travel. Today’s batteries are too heavy and bulky to match the energy density of fossil fuels on long-distance voyages and flights.
