Closing Material Loops: New Opportunities for the Refractories Industry
Resource and material efficiency are becoming increasingly important in high-temperature industries. Raw material prices, environmental requirements and the need to reduce CO₂ emissions are increasing the pressure to keep valuable materials in circulation for longer.
Refractory materials offer significant potential in this regard. According to estimates by TU Bergakademie Freiberg, up to 28 million tonnes of used refractory materials are generated worldwide every year.
Valuable components such as alumina, magnesia and silicon carbide can be processed and reused as secondary raw materials.
This is also changing requirements along the value chain. Take-back, sorting and processing are gaining importance and creating new business opportunities for raw material suppliers, refractory manufacturers, recyclers and technology providers.
